HISTORY OF THRONE AND LIBERTY

Originally a top-down Lineage sequel called Lineage Eternal. Lineage Eternal was first announced on November 2011. Eventually, they shifted to a 3rd-person game and decided to change to a new IP. With the pivot from top-down and a Lineage sequel this makes the development of Throne and Liberty over 10 years There is also another new project in development that shares the same IP/world Map called Project E.  See the Map section below. Lineage Eternal had a CBT in 2016 surprising everyone that the game shifted in design (it was some sort of MxM) far from what it was previously announced in 2011, which received a lot of negative feedback and they went back to the whiteboard after a few years they renamed it Project TL with the trailer that looked very Lost Ark-ish, now the title changed to Throne & Liberty. ENVIRONMENT

  • There is a big focus on the 3D topography of Throne and Liberty and traversal using transformations and grappling.  And weather changing the environment, player skills, etc.
  • See the Day/Night, Travel/Transportation, and Weather sections below for the details.

LOCAL EVENTS

  • Events that trigger with the schedule viewable on the world map.  Some of these are PVP events and they have a leaderboard.  They last approximately 20 minutes and each event occurs every 3 hours.  The example given was the “wolf tails” event near the starter area. (Source)

MEMORIALS

  • Server-wide events take place on each server.  When a server progresses to the next stage all players are on the same stage.  World content is experienced together instead of players being phased. (Source)

UI

The UI is minimalist in nature. The player name plate shows buffs below the bar, and debuffs above the bar (Source)

Health and Mana are confirmed resources and are visible on the player nameplate (7,005 health and 11,360 mana at level 56)

Stamina is also a confirmed resource, that seems to be used for transformations, some skills(See Counterattack GS #2 skill), and grappling. (Source)

The Console UI shows 4 spots on the bottom left for consumables, and 8 spots on the bottom right for weapon skills (Source)

CLASSES | WEAPON TYPES

Weapon choices give you your “class”.  Similar to New World.  As mentioned in the PVE section the max skills I saw was 8 on a level 56 character(Also seen in several other places, and in the skill select screen).  With having two weapons you can swap between the total would be 16 skills.  The max level I saw was 66, so the max is probably at least 70 or higher so we might have more skills at higher levels. You can level all the weapons on one character if you want, which makes alts not necessary

Counterattack (Greatsword Ability)

Counter Parry: Advanced Two-handed Point

Consumes 35 stamina to block attacks with your hands.  When the defense is successful, damage is reduced by 100% and status effects are ignored.  Stamina is further reduced in proportion to the reduced damage.  When successfully defending against a strong attack, if it is a melee attack, it deals damage equal to 150% of the basic damage and deals 1-4 with a 70% chance.

With 2 key, you use the defense action skill to defend against monster attacks.  Watch the direction of the attack part and match the timing to use the skill

Shadow Chaser (Dagger Ability)

A skill that allows you to move behind a target and deal damage equal to 100% of the base damage so quickly that only the trailing edge of your shadow is visible.  Has a 60% chance of decreasing the target’s movement speed by 50% for 6 seconds. (Source)

Shadow Hunter Moxie’s Ability to default 5%, wind direction up to 2.3% extra per 1 m/s wind speed when attacked in the vicinity.  An additional arrow that deals 40% of the default damage with a probability Fire.

Increase the probability of additional projectiles 2 / 2.3 / 2.6 / 2.9 / 3.2

Acquisition effect by Rating

Legend: Default 10% chance of additional projectiles being cast, speed Steam up to 3.5% per 1 m/s

Interpretation: Basically this is a Longbow ability that can be affected by the wind and has a chance for additional projectiles based on wind speed and direction, and based on the quality of the skill. (Source)

Lightning Chain (Wand Ability)

Blow the lightning of the Blitzkrieg property and give 160% + 90 full damage.  If the target is in a state, the perimeter(5m radius to the target Damage is metastasized (up to 3 times, no metastatic mid-iron).  Transition to be Each time, damage is reduced by 20% Debility:  Complexation Add as much as 10% per single iron if damage is done to the target.  Deals damage.

Increased damage 160% + 60 / 160%+70 / 160%+80 / 160%+90 / 160%+100

Acquisition effects by rating

Rare: per superposition, if damage is done to the Debilitating Igniting target 10% additional damage

Hero: Lighting Chain Reuse Time when ‘wet’ state 50% reduction

Legend: The number of transitions increased by up to 4 circuits

Interpretation: If the target is dry the lightning chain hits one target, if wet it can hit more targets and do more damage.  Hero Quality can reduce the cooldown 50%, Legend quality can increase the targets to 4. (Source)

Ghost Step (Dagger Skill)

Move speedator 39 for 6 seconds to trigger when the target is killed% increasing ability.  At night, the duration is 1.5 times increase

Increase movement speed 30% / 33% / 36% / 39% / 42%

Acquisition effect by rating

Rare: Mana regeneration increases by 20 for duration do not consume one of the first suhab of the lastime time

COMBAT

Hybrid action/tab combat seems to be the style choice.  Similar to Guild Wars 2 potentially.  Tab is the targeting but with melee cleaving and a lot of movement and presumably some dodge abilities it could have an action feel.

Skills are based on your weapon choices.  The max # of active skills from the gameplay videos we have seen is 8.  You can equip two weapons and swap weapons so that would make the max 16.  However, it could be higher as the 8 skills were on a level 56 character and the highest level I saw was 66, so you might get more at a higher level.  You might also have 4 slots for consumables.  Several of the skills have an action “timing” component like the Greatsword Counter Attack skill. PVE

Past NCSoft games relied heavily on player driven content and PVP.  In this MMO they want to have PVE be a big focus while still having great PVP elements. (Source)

Dungeons are Open World with PVP (likely) turned on. Dungeons have multiple layers and going directly to the bottom floor of a dungeon is possible using gliding or grappling skills (Source)

Raid Bosses are Open World and PVP is (likely) turned on. (Source)

STORY

They want to have a compelling story but they want it to be optional for those that are not interested. (Source)

There is little known about the current story, but they did release a “TL Story Map” and “TL Play Novel” that give some story information

PVP

There is a lot that is still unconfirmed about PVP after the latest update.  Before it was assumed that PVP was always on but there was a Karma system called “Evil Deeds” that would punish players for PKing other players.  But in the recent Director’s Preview, we learned that most zones are now Safe Zones and that PVP is not forced.  In a recent skill tooltip translation for the Greatsword CounterAttack skill, I learned that the Evil Deeds system IS still in place in PVP areas due to the tutorial text on the screen. (See Counterattack in the Weapon Skills section)

  • Evil Deeds:
    • Evil deeds is the PK Karma System.  Appears to still be used in PVP Zones.  All that has ever been said about this system is that it is turned on during the day, and turned off at night. (Day is 4 hours, Night is 1 hour..see the Day/Night Cycles section for more information) (Source)

Occupation Wars/Guild Wars

  • A battle over open-world objectives that guilds can own (Source)
  • Rain can affect the area around the objectives (Source)
  • Objectives
    • In TL’s fields there are objects which can only be maintained by guilds only.
      • These objects are called the Blessing Stone and the Dimension Stone
        • These two stones together are called the Possession Stones
        • The acquisition of the possession stones allows for enhanced Guild Capabilities as well as procurement of necessary raw materials (Source)

Siege Warfare:

  • A fight over “large” objectives such as Castles
  • Defensive side has the advantage, but as time goes on the player can transform into a golem destroying the wall or jumping on top of the wall to disturb the opponent’s camp.  And a golem that carries people also appears.
  • There is a secret attack route that can only be used when it is not raining. (Source)
  • Siege Victory rewards 6.7 million sollant, and 122K Gold Lucent(right side of screen) (Source)

We do know that PVP is turned on in dungeons and open world raid bosses (See the PVE section above.

We also know that PVP is enabled for certain “Regional Events” such as the Wolf Tails events (Source)

PVP appears to be also turned on on the “flying island” that is used for transportation to unreachable areas called “Gigantrithe”.  This object moves along a set route like a subway line.  See the “Travel/Transportation” section below for details.

TRAVEL | TRANSPORTATION

Fast travel appears to be limited.  There seems to be an emphasis on players using transformation skills to travel faster instead of mounts.  Players can transform into a wolf for faster land travel speed.  A shark for faster aquatic speed.  And a bird for faster air travel/gliding.  See below for details on the various transformations that we have seen.

Grappling to reach higher areas has been seen in multiple gameplay trailers. (Source)

There was one potential “teleportation” stone seen in the first gameplay trailer. (Source)

There is a “flying island” that is called Gigantrithe that appears and allows players to reach places that otherwise are not accessible.  This island appears every few hours and exists for 30 minutes. (Source 1, Source 2)

DAY | NIGHT CYCLES

Day lasts for 4 hours, Night lasts for 1 hour. (Source)

Day | Night can affect player abilities

  • Example of day/night affecting player spells:
    • “One player skill that changes with the environment is the dagger skill, Ghost Step, with increases movement speed at night, and Dagger Venom’s blood poison effect changes depending on whether it is day or night”

WEATHER

The ratio of sunny and rainy weather is 4:1 and once the weather changes it is maintained for 30 minutes.

  • Rain can affect certain skills, monster abilities, drop tables, and spawn tables.
  • Last 30 minutes
  • Sunny is a 4:1 ratio to rainy
  • Rain and other forms of weather can affect the environment by filling areas and not allowing passage by the players.  Example given was rain filling up a sewer passage to the castle that players can use as an alternate assault path when it is sunny.  This means the few players that have the ability to change the weather to rain could change it to rain for 30 minutes and block that passage.   • Example given for a player spell that is affected by the rain is the lightning spell will bounce to multiple targets in the rain, but only hits one target when it is sunny (Source)

WIND

  • Wind can affect certain skills, monster abilities, drop tables, and spawn tables
  • The developers stated that wind is difficult to express visually, whereas rain and other weather is easier
  • Example of a player ability that is affected by the wind is projectiles traveling further.  There used to be more effects but they toned it down to just projectile distance increasing (Source)
  • Gliding distance also increases when the wind is out of the right direction with enough strength.  This could be enough to allow players to glide over castle walls. (Source)
  • There is a high level skill that only one person per server can have that can change the wind direction. (Source)

    • Wind effect was reduced from the initial plan.  Rain and night are easy to express visually, but wind is difficult.  The current wind effect is to increase long range projectiles distance and gliding distance
    • One player skill that changes with the environment is the dagger skill, Ghost Step, with increases movement speed at night, and Venom’s blood poison effect changes depending on whether it is day or night

A: More skill based.  Things like animal transformations, cooldown usage, and overall planning of your attacks is very important in 1v1 situations.  In group play it is more about formations and usage of key skills.  The environment and traversal skills also play a big role.

Q: Is combat targeting(TAB??) or non-targeting(Action??) 

A: “Combat is a targeting method” (TAB Confirmed?)

Q: What Races can you play as?  What about transformations?
A:
– The only playable race is humans.
– Players can transform into various land, aquatic, and siege animals/monsters

– The transformations are powerful and give information and travel abilities only available while in these forms

A: 

  • There are limitations.  Things like gliding over a castle wall might be possible if you get to a high enough point, and glide well.  Or if the wind is strong enough and out of the right direction.
    – There is a high level skill that only one person per server can have that can change the wind direction.
    – Other weather/environment changing skills change the climate/cause a solar eclipse(night)

Q: Do these skills have a big impact on the battle?

A: Yes

Q: It must be difficult to raise a character with that skill?

A: These skills cannot be acquired by leveling a character, you must go out and get them(Events, leaderboards)

Q: Not all guilds having this skill could create conflict? 

A: 

  • Yes, and it can make the fight change depending on who has each skill
  • The skills have a high cooldown and timing of the skill is critical

Q: How big of an impact do these environmental effects/skills have?  Players might complain that they lost a fight because it rained, etc.
A:

  • At first the skills/weather had high impact.  We have lowered it to be less drastic of an effect, but still matter
  • For example attack power of ranged attacks was affected by the wind, later we changed it to just the range of the projectiles to tune it down
  • Instead of massive combat changes we have changed it to be more of a change of environment.  For example different mob spawns/drop tables at night.
  • “In <TL>, there is a concept of ‘bad deeds’ that accumulate when PK is performed, but when PK is performed at night, this does not accumulate.” (Evil Deeds/Bad Deeds, PK/Karma system??)
  • Topography also matters, puddles of water filling an area when it rains for example
  • Some bosses are stronger at night or when it rains, but if they are stronger their drops are also better
  • Weather changes might open certain dungeon areas that were inaccessible before

A:

  • “There is no features that can only be reached by charging”
  • Those who understand the game can advance faster.  Those who pay can receive more benefits.  But the key is to control the gap (Essentially minimize the effect of P2W, IMO)
  • Microtransactions allow players that have less time to play a way to catch up

Q: Some Group Content only accessible to the top players?
A: Those that are ahead “Can do a little more”, but there is not a lot that is locked away by the highest leveled characters.

Q: Why the classless system?  Can you Tank, Heal, DPS?

A:

  • In group play, it is possible to play the Tank, Heal, or DPS roles.  Weapons determine the abilities/class you are, and you level the weapon to get more proficient with that weapon/class.  You can dual wield and mix/match weapons to get different ability combinations, and you can have two unique weapon sets and swap between them. (Similar to GW2 or NW)
  • This allows players to reroll a “class” more easily essentially

Q: How many character slots?
A: There is talk of only having one character slot since characters can level all the weapons if they want to reroll.  But this is not confirmed

Q: If there is no class, how do you grow a character?  Are stats selected by the players?
A: Players distribute stats.  There is a possibility of different builds, some Greatsword users might go strength, some might choose to increase the power of skills.

Q: How strong is gear?
A: 

  • Gear does not create a huge gap.  There is a gap between players that have played a long time and new players, but the gap is not as big as some games
  • You can feel the difference in gear, but it is not enough to completely turn the tide of war
  • There is no “one shots”, instead the time to kill is long enough to allow for strategy to take place

Q: Can players “Control” an area of the map like in Lineage?  Such as dungeons or world bosses?
A: Controlling or locking down a boss or dungeon will not be the optimal way to play.  There is no way to completely prevent that from happening, but it is not the best way to get ahead in the game.
